Child Developmental Disorders Treatment
Developmental disorders affect thousands of children. Mental retardation and the wide range of autism spectrum disorders are just some of the many conditions that can affect a child’s ability to communicate, socialize, think and behave.
Although there is no cure for developmental disorders, early intervention and a combined approach to care can have a lasting and positive impact. That’s why our specialists work closely with other providers to help diagnose and treat developmental conditions in children as soon as possible. Working with your family doctor, speech pathologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists and teachers, our team can give your child the support and confidence to reach – and achieve.
Diagnosis
Like many conditions affecting the central nervous system, there is no single test to confirm a developmental disorder. Typically, diagnosis starts with a complete medical history and physical exam performed by your family doctor.
If no physical disorder is found, our specialists will conduct an extensive evaluation that takes an in-depth look at the child’s development levels. We spend time with the child, observing his play or her ability to socialize. Using a variety of assessment tools, we evaluate the child’s cognitive abilities and behavior patterns. We also meet with parents, teachers or other adults who are familiar with the child’s symptoms.
Our evaluation is based on strict diagnostic standards developed by the American Psychiatric Association and follows guidelines established by its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders – Fourth Edition (DSM – IV).
Our findings, as well as the child’s medical history, will help determine the diagnosis.
Treatment
Early intervention is critical. Once a diagnosis has been confirmed, treatment will begin right away to strengthen the child’s behavioral abilities. This may include socialization exercises, or behavioral therapy to reinforce and support positive behavior.
When combined with treatments such as speech, physical therapy or occupational therapy, these and other exercises can dramatically improve your child’s verbal, cognitive and social abilities.
